The MQ-2 type smoke sensor is made of a tin dioxide semiconductor gas sensing material. When it works at a temperature of 200 to 300 °C, the tin dioxide adsorbs the oxygen in the air, which reduces the density of electrons on the semiconductor and thus increasing the resistance. When it comes into contact with smoke, if the barriers at grain boundaries are changed by the smoke, the conductivity on the surface is changed accordingly. In this way, smoke can be detected. A higher smoke density indicates a higher conductivity and lower output resistance.

mBuild is a platform consisting of smart sensors and actuators that are quick and easy to connect and program using Scratch and Python.

Each module includes a pre-programmed microprocessor, allowing students to immediately see how the sensor or actuator works as soon as they connect it, together with the battery module.

Combined with the CyberPi, students learn how a microcontroller operates through inputs and outputs, while gaining hands-on experience with prototyping and programming in mBlock5.

The mBuild platform is designed to teach smart technologies and robotics to all types of learners, at every level. Even without prior knowledge, students quickly experience a “Wow” moment that sparks curiosity and motivates them to learn more.

At more advanced levels, such as in technical and vocational education, the sophisticated sensors and actuators continue to offer meaningful challenges.

The sensors and actuators work in a similar way to those used with Arduino, but with the added advantage of an integrated microcontroller and smart plug connections.

This shifts the focus toward learning about prototyping and innovation, making technology accessible to everyone.
